A day in the life of a Security Forces Officer

First and formost Base defense, security and law enforcement on a base is nothing I mean NOTHING like an episode of Cops!

Normally a 2Lt is assigned to a Flight of 20-50 personnel and works a shift. 12 Hr shifts are the norm now and you can expect to work both sides of that clock in either a 3x3 or "panama"schedule. 3x3= 3 on 3 off and panama is 3on 2off 2on 3 off (if done correctly you get every other weekend off).

Your flight has a MSgt or two and several TSgts to help teach you what you need to know. Use their experience to help you make decisions.

As a SF officer you are the "on scene" commander and the direct representative of the WING COMMANDER until assistance arrives. Lets face it. Not many other officers are roaming around the base at 0300.

Your day starts about an hour prior to guardmount and your first stop is to see your Flt. Sgt and see if there is any crisis management to do with the posting roster. Then go to the Armory and draw your weapon(s) and radio. Once your flight arrives you conduct guardmount by inspecting troops, equipment and passing on current information. Then you command "post" and everyone goes to work.

You fill your day or night by visiting each of the posts and seeing how the troops are doing and assessing their readiness. You also attend meetings and take care of paperwork. In the event of an incident you respond and provide support to the Airman or NCO at the scene and keep the big picture in mind.

At the end of the shift you review the blotter for accuracy and sign it. This is a big deal. The Wing CC and several other agencies read the blotter even before they drink that first cup of coffee. Since you were there you anser the questions they have, so it is often a good decision to stay late and answer any questions from your Operations Officer or Commander.

14 hrs from the start of your shift you may be done and get to do it again the next day or night.

If you want to deploy this is the career field for you. We are currently, and will for at least next 3-4 years, deploy for 6 months at a time. As a 2d Lt you might do anything from help train Iraqi Police to running a flight performing Air Base defense missions to performing Law and Order missions on Army/AF bases.

As a 2d Lt you will get leadership experience that few other career fields provide. Because you are a first responder it will be up to you to make on-the-spot decisions regarding emergency/security response. Your flight chief (a.k.a. flight sergeant) will be there to help guide you, but ultimately you are in charge and will have to make some tough decisions. Additionally, the career field is made up largley of young Airmen (18-22 years) who are still maturing. You will be handling personnel issues ranging from underage drinking to Airmen having difficulty adjusting to a new marriage.

If you like a challenge and like being kept on your toes all the time this is a great career field. You also have the opportunity to guide you Airmen and develop the future enlisted SF leaders.
