Best/Worst

What do you like best about being a SFS officer?

What do you like least?

The best part of 31PX AFSC is the variety of experiences and working with the troops. You will get more LEADERSHIP experience in this career field than most any other AFSC. I also think the level of appreciation for the support side of AF operations is very important.

For Example:
After 2 months of AD life and intital base level training I was made my first trip into the Missle Field of FE Warren for a 3 day strech and in charge of security for a 3000 sq mile area and the supervision of 34 airmen and NCOs. My closest site to base was 85 miles.

Perhaps the worst part of the job is the shift work initally and the high operations tempo. As a new LT you will get driven hard because this AFSC is hard.

The best is the camaraderie among Airmen in this career field. This is probably one of the most tight-knit career fields out there. The people are amazing. Don't get me wrong, we eat our young when they mess up, but then we build them back up. The other great thing is the high standards. Across the board, Airmen in this career field are expected to have pressed uniforms and polished boots. We set the standard for the rest of the career fields.

The worst part right now is deployments. It's tough sending folks out for 6 months at a time. It's even tougher telling them their set to go back out 3-4 months after they return (this is usually due to lengthy pre-deployment training). This can be very tough on young families. On the flip side, many of the young, single Airmen don't mind all the deployments and enjoy the good money they make while deployed. There is less stress on the officer corps, but there are still plenty of deployments for us. My own deployment to Baghdad was relatively easy. It was actually a nice break from the home station mission because there was a lot less bureaucracy to deal with.

The best and worst for the SF career field to me:

Best for me would be having the ability to mold troops into professional warriors. I enjoy the ability to mentor troops and ensure standards are being met.

Worst for me would be the fact that the career field deploys all the time. I am not too concerned about deploying myself, but it gets old telling your troops that they have to deploy again when they just returned a couple months ago.

If you could pick your best day so far to describe, what did it look like?

And your worst?

Sir/Ma'am, when you said that you are not too concerned about deploying ... did you mean that as an officer you deploy less than enlisted personnel or that you do not mind getting deployed all the time?

I have had several great days but what I consider a great day is based on my values. With that said I get the best charge out of seeing my troops excell and develop.

The worst day is a bit easier. I would say that the inital response of the baseI was at during and immediately following 9/11 is the worst. The base overall was not ready for the work and strain. The cops did great and I am proud of them. but the base for the most part was clueless and unwilling to follow security plans because they never actually tested them. The only thing they tested was waivers and deviations during less than realistic exercises.
